Group Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What do I talk about in group therapy?

Ideally, you will talk about your life - your victories, struggles, and everything in between. You will explore past and current relational patterns and how they are showing up in life and in group.

You will be invited to put your thoughts and feelings into words and to explore the relational dynamics that exist in your life. The risks of vulnerability can heighten fears for clients prior to joining the group, but the reward of such vulnerability is often worth the risk.

If I have never done therapy before can I join a group?

Yes! However this may present it’s own unique challenges for you. Hunter recommends at least 2 individual sessions prior to joining the group and an additional 4 sessions after group has started to have a place to process the group experience.

If a prospective group member already has an individual therapist they are seeing regularly, these session requirements with Hunter are not required.

How long do your groups last?

Each group session length varies depending on the number of present group members for that day. 45 mins for 2 or less group members, 60 mins for 4 or less, and 75 mins for 5-7 group members.

What are your fees?

Hunter charges $70 a group session. As long as a member is in the group they are responsible for paying for weekly sessions whether or not he/she attends group. Occasionally (due to holidays, therapist scheduling conflicts, etc.) group will not meet. Group members are not responsible for paying for sessions when group does not meet.

Hunter offers reduced-rate sessions for clients with financial limitations. Let Hunter know if you’re interested in learning more about a sliding-scale arrangement.

Do you take insurance?

Hunter does not accept insurance, but some insurance carriers will provide partial reimbursement with a “superbill” that is provided by Hunter. You’re encouraged to check with your insurance carrier if you’re interested in this arrangement.

If I’m interested in joining a group, what do I do first?

Contact Hunter via phone (615-208-6026) or email (hunter@hunterlawrencecounseling.com) to express your interest in group therapy. The first step is often scheduling an initial individual appointment to process your desires and what you hope to get out of group.
